West Morris needed every point to ward off an upset bid from Nutley on Monday night in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA/Rothman Orthopaedics North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 Tournament.
Both teams finished with a 7-7 bout split, but West Morris benefitted from three Nutley forfeits and picked up bonus points at three other weights to win, 35-30, in Long Valley.
Nutley won four straight bouts in the upperweights to take a 30-29 into the final bout, but West Morris picked up six points at 106 pounds when Nutley did not have wrestler to fill the weight. Nutley also forfeited at 120 and 132.
Michael Hare won by fall at 113 while Robert Bohr (138) and Colin Loughney (170) won by major decision to help West Morris build a 14-9 advantage in bonus points.
West Morris, the No. 4 seed, will now hit the road to take on top-seeded West Essex, ranked No. 16 in the NJ.com Top 20.
West Essex, the reigning Group 3 champion, throttled Leonia/Palisades Park in its quarterfinal match Monday night.
